As El Niño Fuels Rising Temperatures, European Cooling Appliances Enter a New Growth Cycle
As El Niño Fuels Rising Temperatures, European Cooling Appliances Enter a New Growth Cycle
2026-07-07

Key Takeaways

     Heatwaves are intensifying across Europe, and extreme heat is evolving from a short-term weather event into a decisive force shaping how households live and the appliances they buy.

     Globally, cooling-equipment growth is driven largely by rising average selling prices (ASP). Europe tells a different story: sales are surging while ASPs are up only marginally — a sign that growth is powered by genuine demand, not price hikes.

     Hemmed in by installation constraints and housing conditions, European consumers gravitate toward portable, plug-and-play, or easy-to-install products — portable air conditioners, air coolers, tower fans, window-sealing kits, and ice makers.

     In Europe’s cooling market, competitiveness is no longer just about raw cooling power. Easy installation, energy efficiency, quiet operation, and the right accessories for each use case are what will let brands capture the next wave of demand.

01  Relentless Heat Is Rewiring European Appliance Habits

Europe has endured unrelenting heat since the start of summer 2026.

According to the World Meteorological Organization, the late-June heatwave shattered multiple temperature records and took a toll on health, agriculture, infrastructure, and labor productivity. Ground temperatures in parts of central and southern France and northern Spain topped 50°C, and Germany broke its national all-time high-temperature record three days running.

The emergence of El Niño conditions, meanwhile, points to a longer-term rise in global temperatures. For Europe, the heat is no longer a passing weather event — it is reshaping how people live and the appliances they choose.

02  European Cooling Demand Takes Off — Equipment Sales Up 62%

This shift is already showing up in the appliance market.

Sandalwood’s global e-commerce data shows that in January–May 2026, global sales of cooling equipment (air conditioners, fans, air coolers, central air conditioners, portable air conditioners, and ice makers) rose 23% year on year, while ASP climbed 21%.

With sales tracking the price rise almost one for one, the global picture is largely one of trading up — a shift toward higher-end products rather than more units sold.

Europe looks very different. Over the same period, sales of cooling equipment there jumped 62%, while ASP edged up just 6%.

With sales far outpacing prices, the growth is being driven by demand rushing in — not by price hikes or a move upmarket.

For context, Latin America’s sales rose 72% but ASP climbed 65%, and Southeast Asia’s sales rose 41% with ASP up 32%.

What sets Europe apart is how directly the heat converts into actual purchases — turning cooling equipment from a stopgap bought in an emergency into an everyday household comfort essential.

03  Portable and Easy-to-Install Cooling Products Top the List

Europe’s demand boom is also shaped by local housing conditions and the hurdles of installation.

In Germany, for instance, a fixed split-system air conditioner usually means drilling through walls, mounting an outdoor unit, and altering the building’s façade. Renters typically need their landlord’s consent and run up against construction, cost, and building-code constraints.

That’s why low-effort, ready-to-use products — portable air conditioners, air coolers, tower fans, window-sealing kits, and ice makers — become the go-to choices when a heatwave hits.

Within Europe’s cooling categories, these low-effort, instant-cooling products posted the strongest growth in January–May 2026:

     Lightweight devices led the way: sales of fans and air coolers jumped 113% and 85% respectively;

     Demand for complementary accessories also heated up — air-conditioner accessories sales rose 61%;

     Core cooling products like air conditioners and ice makers kept up a fast pace, each with sales up more than 30%.

04  Localization Is the New Battleground for Brand Competitiveness

This points to a fresh opportunity in the European market: the heat is turning cooling equipment from a seasonal buy into a form of “household climate adaptation.”

In Europe, a product’s competitiveness hinges less on raw cooling power than on how well it fits the way people actually live.

     With a large share of older buildings, rentals, and small apartments, fixed air conditioners run into walls — literally: drilling, outdoor units, skilled installation work, and landlord approval;

     Steep electricity prices put energy efficiency and long-term running costs front of mind;

     And because many older European buildings are compact and poorly soundproofed, quiet operation matters more than ever.

So easy installation, low energy use, quiet operation, and the right accessories for each scenario — like window-sealing kits — are becoming what sets competitive cooling products apart.

For appliance makers, the opportunity extends well beyond selling a single air conditioner. It lies in building an integrated solution around how Europeans really live — portable cooling, energy-efficient temperature control, quiet operation, and the right accessories.

Only by solving the real pain points — hard installation, high running costs, noise sensitivity, and a poor fit with how people live — can brands capture the demand now opening up in Europe, and use this wave of heat-driven demand to accelerate their expansion.
